Importing Large CSV Files

If you’re importing a large history of transactions or balances into Monarch, you may run into issues if your CSV file is too big. If you're receiving an error that your file is too large, you’ll need to break the large file into smaller chunks.

Breaking Up Large Files

There are many ways to break up large files into smaller ones to allow our importer to process them. We recommend starting by splitting the file as follows:

  1. Split by account

    • If your file contains transactions for multiple accounts, create one CSV file per account. For example, if you have 3 accounts, make 3 separate CSV files.

      • If you start your import from a specific account’s details page, the account is already selected and all rows in the file will be assigned to that account.

  2. Split by date range (if needed)

    • If a single account file is still receiving an error, try splitting it into smaller files based on date ranges. (For example, one file per year or per six months)

Sample Spreadsheets

Use our sample templates to ensure the correct format to import. We recommend reading through the Importing Transaction History and Importing Balance History help center articles before importing.

To use a sample file:

  • Copy your data into the template (overwrite the example rows but keep the headers)

  • Save the file as a CSV before uploading
