Bill Split

Overview

Bill Split is a new Monarch feature that helps you split a group bill quickly and fairly. No matter how complex the bill, Monarch does the math for you and makes it easy to coordinate payment.

Just scan or upload a receipt, and Monarch will automatically parse items and prices for you. Share a link or QR code with your group, and everyone can claim their items and settle the bill effortlessly.

How to use Bill Split

Initiator (Person who starts the split):

  1. Open the Monarch mobile app
  2. Tap the Navigation Menu icon (top left) > Bill Split
  3. (Optional) If you paid the bill, enter your Venmo username to get paid directly through Venmo
  4. Select Scan receipt and add the bill via:
    • Photo Gallery or Camera
    • Note: On iOS 26 and Andoroid, options appear as:
      • Take a photo
      • Select existing photo
  5. Monarch scans your receipt automatically
  6. Select items to:
    • Edit names/prices
    • Split shared items
  7. Invite others by sharing a QR code or texting a link

Participants (people joining the split):

  1. Scan the QR code or open the shared link
  2. Enter your name and email
  3. Select View your split here
  4. Select your items > Confirm items
  5. Select Continue to review total
  6. Review your total and pay the initiator via:
    • Venmo: If you select Venmo, we will bring you to Venmo where your split information will automatically be populated
    • Another app (CashApp, Zelle, etc.): Open your payment app of choice and reference the total from your split in Monarch

FAQs

Do I have to be a Monarch member to use Bill Split?

No. Only the person who initiates Bill Split needs a Monarch account. Participants do not need to sign up.

If participants would like to sign up for Monarch, during the Bill Split process, they can select the option to receive a referral code from the initiator for 50% off their first year (annual plan), and the existing Monarch member (initiator) will receive a $30 gift card.

Is Bill Split available on web?

At this time, Bill Split is a mobile specific feature.

Is Venmo my only payment option?

Venmo is the only direct in-app payment option in Monarch right now.

To use other payment methods, participants can view and copy their split amount in Monarch, and paste the total in their app of choice:

  • CashApp
  • Zelle
  • Any other payment app

Does this feature involve AI? If so, how my data is protected?

Bill Split uses AI to automatically parse items and prices for you. There is no personal information involved, only what’s visible on the receipt itself. You can read more about how we approach data privacy when leveraging AI here.
