Tips & Tricks for Using Monarch

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite (and perhaps lesser known) tips and tricks for how to get the most out of Monarch.

  • Customize settings for transactions that need review: You can fully customize which transactions are marked for review (and in turn, which ones aren’t). Only want to be notified about transactions over a certain amount? Create a custom rule for this on the rules page.
  • Global review preferences: Within your preferences center, you can choose to mark or unmark all new transactions as needing review, or choose to only be notified about transactions that are uncategorized. You can also turn off edits to pending transactions to prevent having to do this again once the transaction is finalized.
  • Use the "Allow edits to pending transactions" setting (Settings > Preferences) to determine whether changes can be made to pending transactions (including rules). As a general rule, we discourage this setting from being turned on, as matching pending transactions to their posted version is not always possible, so changes made to pending transactions may be lost when the posted version arrives.
  • Custom images and logos: You can upload custom images or logos for merchants and financial accounts to customize how they show up on your transaction and account pages. Just click on the upper right corner of a transaction and click “edit merchant details” or do the same from an account and click “edit account” to do this.
  • Merge merchants: If you have the same merchant showing up under multiple names, you can merge them in your Merchant settings!

  • Hide transactions from your budget: You can hide particular transactions from showing up in your budget and cash flow, individually or in groups, by creating rules. Learn more here.
  • How to use the Transfers category: Anything categorized under the “Transfers” category is excluded from your budget and spending so that it is not double counted. This is useful for credit card payments, for moving money between various accounts. You can also create new, custom transfer categories. Learn more here.
  • Use tags for added insights: Tags can be a great way to review your expenses other than at the category or merchant level. For example, tag all transactions from a recent vacation and you can easily see how much you spent on your trip across all categories.
  • Use Original Statement for rules: Want to make a rule based on Original Statement data? You can do that! Just select "Original Statement" instead of "Merchant Name"!
