Hiding or Unhiding Transactions

You can hide transactions from your transactions list, cash flow, reports, and budget by following the "Hide transaction" flow below. By default, these transactions will not be shown in your main transaction list, but can be found and added back into your list for review through the filters menu.

Hide transactions using Rules

To hide an upcoming purchase and keep a surprise secret, you must create a rule to hide the transaction before it displays in your account.

On Web:

      1. Navigate to Settings > Rules.
      2. Create a rule that captures the transactions you would like to hide.
      3. Under the “Then apply these updates…” section, select the Hide transaction toggle.

On Mobile:

      1. Select the three-line stack in the top-left corner.
      2. Select Rules.
      3. Select the “+” in top-right corner.
      4. Create your rule criteria.
      5. Scroll down and select the Hide transaction toggle.
      6. If you have multiple transactions to hide, you can click “apply to X existing transactions.
      7. Select Create rule.

Hiding a transaction does not remove its Needs Review status, and it may still appear when filtering for transactions that need review.

Unhiding transactions

You can unhide individual transactions or multiple hidden transactions (including those hidden by rules). Note: If transactions were hidden on the account level, they cannot be unhidden using these steps; they can only be unhidden on the account level.

On Web:

      1. Visit the Transactions tab.
      2. Select Filters at the top.
      3. Under the Other section, select Hidden Only.
      4. Edit multiple transactions by clicking Edit Multiple at the top of the page, or edit each transaction individually by clicking into the transaction and clicking the "eye" icon on the top of the details page.
    •

On Mobile:

      1. Select Transactions.

      2. Select the filters stack in the search bar.

      3. Scroll down to Other and select Hidden Only.

      4. Edit multiple transactions by clicking the checkmark icon at the top of the page and selecting the transactions you wish to edit, or edit each transaction individually by tapping the transaction and untoggling the Hide button.

Pending transactions

When you hide a transaction that’s still pending, keep in mind that it may reappear once the bank processes it. This happens because finalized transactions sometimes come through as a new entry. If that occurs, you can simply hide that transaction again. To ensure this processed transaction never appears, you can create a rule before making the purchase to hide the transaction, no matter its state.

Hidden Accounts

Note that if transactions were hidden on an account level, meaning the account settings were edited to hide either the entire account or all transactions within an account (versus hiding the transactions on just a transaction level), they cannot be unhidden using the steps above. These transactions can only be unhidden on the account level.

How Hidden Transactions Affect Review

Hidden transactions can still require review. Hiding a transaction does not remove its “Needs Review” status.

To make sure you can still complete your review tasks:

  • When filtering by “Needs Review by Anyone” or by a specific reviewer, Monarch automatically includes both hidden and visible transactions.

  • This ensures that hidden transactions that need review continue to show up in your review list.

If you ever see “You're all caught up” but expected transactions to review, try checking the transaction’s hidden status — it may still be hidden.

FAQs

What happens when I hide a transaction? Does it delete it?

  • Hiding a transaction does not delete it. It simply removes the transaction from your main transactions list, cash flow, reports, and budget calculations.
  • The transaction still exists in your account and can be unhidden at any time. This is useful for excluding transfers, reimbursements, or non-budget-related transactions from your financial analysis, and for making sure surprises are kept hidden.

Will hiding a transaction affect account balances or net worth?

  • Hiding a transaction removes it from your transaction list, reports, and budget, but it does not impact your account balances or net worth calculations. The hidden transaction still exists in your data—it’s just excluded from specific views and calculations to help you focus on what matters most.

Why are hidden transactions showing up as "needs review"?

  • If you hide a transaction it might show up as needing review depending on how your settings are designed. Transactions can be both hidden and marked as needing review.

  • You may have "Mark new transactions as Needs Review" or "Mark uncategorized transactions as Needs Review" set in Preferences (https://app.monarch.com/settings/preferences), and you may have a Rule that's marking matching transactions as hidden.
  • You may have a Rule that marks transactions as Needing Review and the same, or another, rule marks those has hidden.
  • To handle this, you can edit that transaction and mark it as not needing review. If you have more than one, you can bulk edit those transactions and mark them as not needing review.

  • However, if you set all transactions as needing review, those hidden transactions will show up in the rapid review flow.
