Delete a Connection (Financial Institution) vs Delete an Account

An institution is the connected provider (your bank login), and an account is an individual checking, savings, credit card, loan, or investment account that appears under that institution in Monarch.

To clean up your institutions list or troubleshoot a connection issue, you may want to delete a connection (financial institution) or delete an account. The right option depends on what you want to keep.

  • Delete a connection (financial institution): removes the entire institution and every account under it. (Ex: Deleting your Chase connection will delete all Chase checking and savings accounts, credit cards, etc.). This will permanently remove transaction and balance history.
  • Delete an account: removes one specific account while keeping the rest of the institution connection. (Ex: Deleting just one Chase checking account). This will permanently remove balance history.

Choose the right option

Delete a connection (financial institution) if you want to:

  • Remove the institution from Monarch entirely.
  • Remove all accounts that come from that institution.
  • You can’t restore a deleted connection. If you delete a connection, you’ll need to reconnect it as a new connection manually.

Delete an account if you want to:

  • Remove one account but keep the institution connection.
  • Keep other accounts from the same institution.
  • You can undelete a deleted account if you change your mind. (This option is not available for deleted connections.) ‼️ Please note: This action restores transaction history only. It does not restore balance history, so we do not recommend deleting and undeleting accounts for general troubleshooting.

If you only want it out of view

If you do not want to see an account but do not want to permanently remove its history, use Hide instead. More information here: Hiding an account.

Before you delete (recommended)

If you want a copy of your data, download it first:
