Overview
If you have company equity grants, they often make up a significant part of your future net worth and cashflow planning. The Equity Tracking feature allows members to track detailed equity compensation, such as ISOs, NSOs, RSUs, and RSAs, directly in Monarch.
By adding your grants, you can visualize your vesting schedule, track the value of exercised versus unvested shares, and update company valuations over time.
This feature is designed primarily for tracking private company equity or grants that cannot be synced automatically through a brokerage.

You can add an equity account by uploading your grant documents for automatic analysis, or by entering the details manually.
- Select +Add account from the Accounts page.
- Select Company equity.
- Enter the Company name and select the Company status (Private or Public).
- Select a Valuation method:
- 409a (FMV): Best for employees tracking the fair market value of common stock. This is the valuation typically used for tax purposes.

- Custom price: Best for tracking a specific internal valuation or scenario not covered by standard pricing.

Note: Once you set a valuation method for a company (e.g., 409a), it stays fixed. However, you can update the specific share price at any time.
Supported grant types
Monarch supports tracking for the following equity types:
- RSU (Restricted Stock Unit): A commitment to give you shares after a vesting period.
- ISO (Incentive Stock Option): A tax-advantaged option to buy shares at a specific strike price.
- NSO (Non-qualified Stock Option): A common type of stock option that does not qualify for special tax treatments.
- RSA (Restricted Stock Award): A grant of stock that you own immediately but is subject to vesting conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the value of my equity calculated?
The value shown in your net worth is calculated by multiplying your vested shares by the current share price you entered. For options (ISO/NSO), the value is typically calculated as the spread: (Current Price - Strike Price) × Vested Shares.
| Share Category | ISO + NSO | RSU | RSA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exercised & Vested | Full share price | Full Share Price | Full share price |
| Early Exercised (unvested) | Strike price | N/A | N/A |
| Vested (unexercised) | Intrinsic value (FMV - Strike) | N/A | N/A |
| Unvested | $0 | $0 | Purchase price |
Where can I see my vesting schedule?
When you open your equity account, you will see a bar chart visualizing your holdings over time. This chart breaks down your equity into Vested, Exercised, Early Exercised and Unvested categories, allowing you to see when future shares will become available.
Where can I find the information needed to add my grant?
You can typically find your grant details, strike price, and vesting schedule on the platform your company uses to manage equity. Common platforms include Carta or Shareworks.
We recommend logging into your provider, navigating to your "Holdings" or "Grants" section, and downloading your grant agreements (PDFs). You can then upload these files directly to Monarch using the Import from document feature.
Can I track public company grants?
Yes. You can use this feature to visualize vesting schedules for public companies. If you select Public as the company status, Monarch can use the public ticker price for valuation.
If you already have the brokerage account (e.g., E*TRADE, Schwab) connected to Monarch, you can associate your equity account with it. This automatically hides the manual equity balance from your net worth calculation to prevent double-counting, while still keeping your vesting visualization active.
What file formats are supported for the "Import from document" feature?
You can upload PDF files, or images in PNG or JPG format. Ensure the document clearly shows the grant type, quantity, and vesting terms for the best results.
Can I hide my equity from my net worth?
Yes. This is common if you prefer to track the potential value without it affecting your current financial picture, or if you already have the equity counting in a connected brokerage account.
To hide the account balance:
- Open the specific equity account page.
- Select Edit in the top right corner of the screen.
- Select Edit account from the dropdown menu.
- Toggle on Exclude account balance.
- Select Save.
