Splitting Transactions

Splitting a transaction lets you divide a single transaction into separate parts that you can categorize and manage independently. This is useful when one charge covers multiple spending categories, such as a transaction that includes both groceries and household items. Each split becomes its own transaction, so your budget and reports reflect where your money actually went.

How to split a transaction

  1. Open the Transactions page and select the transaction to open the details panel.
  2. Select ... > Split transaction.
  3. Set applicable fields for each split.
  4. To split into more than two transactions, select Add a split.
  5. To remove a split, select X.
  6. Select Split into X transactions.
Note: When you manually split a transaction, Monarch treats that as a review action, so the split transaction no longer appears in Needs Review by default.

If you'd still like to review a split transaction later, you have two options:

  • Set its status back to Needs Review after splitting, so it reappears in your review list.
  • Add a tag or a note (for example, "Review") to the transaction, so you can search for it and come back to it anytime.

You can find any split transaction by using the filters or search on the Transactions page.

Setting up automatic splits

To save time on transactions you split regularly, you can create a rule that splits them automatically. Set this up by selecting Settings > Rules, or follow the steps to create a transaction rule.

Editing a split

  1. Open the Transactions page and filter by Other > Split
  2. Select the transaction to open the details panel, then select Open splits
  3. Edit any fields and select Save.

Removing a split

If you change your mind about splitting a transaction, delete the split rather than deleting the transaction itself.

  1. Open the Transactions page and filter by Other > Split.
  2. Select the transaction to open the details panel, then select Open splits.
  3. Delete the split:
    • On web: Select the delete (trash can) icon next to the specific transaction. To remove all parts at once, select Unsplit.
    • On mobile: Select the specific transaction, then select Delete split.
