Using Reports

We're excited to announce that Reports on mobile is here!
We're slowly rolling it out, so if you don't see it yet, check back soon!

Overview

Monarch’s Reports feature provides powerful visual insights into your financial data. With detailed charts and flexible filters, you can track your cash flow, analyze spending habits, and monitor income trends—all in one place. Whether you want a broad overview or a deep dive into specific transactions, Reports helps you make informed financial decisions.

Each report tab offers two view modes — Breakdown for totals and Trends for change over time — with different chart types available in each. Report charts can be downloaded for further analysis or to share, and each type of chart offers powerful filtering tools to drill down into specific dynamic timeframes or categories, merchants, accounts, tags, amounts, and more. In addition, most areas are interactive, and you can hover over a point to view more details or click to view all related transactions. You can also save reports to revisit your favorites with the click of a button!

Exploring the Report Tabs

Monarch Reports consists of three main sections:

Cash Flow

The Cash Flow tab provides an overview of your financial inflows and outflows. It has two view modes, toggled at the top of the chart:

  • Breakdown shows the fan-favorite Sankey diagram, which visually represents how money moves between categories.
  • Trends shows bar charts (Grouped or Stacked) to track cash flow over time.

The reports can be viewed over a range of timeframes spanning daily to yearly.

Trends bar chart showing the weeks for the last month

Spending

The Spending tab focuses on where your money goes. You can view spending by category, group, or merchant using two view modes:

  • Breakdown shows totals as a donut chart or horizontal bar chart.
  • Trends tracks change over time with grouped or stacked bar charts.

Trends stacked bar chart showing all time by category

Income

The Income tab mirrors the Spending tab but focuses on tracking earnings. You can view income by category, group, or merchant using two view modes:

  • Breakdown shows totals as a donut chart or horizontal bar chart.
  • Trends tracks change over time with grouped or stacked bar charts.

Saved Reports

With Saved Reports, you can bookmark your favorite custom reports and access them instantly. Once a report is saved, it appears on the Reports page, ready to update with fresh data whenever you need it.

Need inspiration? Here are some useful reports Monarch users love:

  • Spending Trends: Track month-over-month trends for specific merchants (like Starbucks) or entire categories (like Restaurants & Bars) to make sure spending doesn’t creep up without you knowing.
  • Vacation Expenses: Using custom trip tags, visualize your trip spending with a pie (donut) chart breaking down hotels, dining, and activities.
  • Household Flows: Use the Sankey diagram to get a clear picture of joint account finances, or even filter for individual accounts so that each person has their own saved Sankey diagram for easy access.
  • Year-end tax reports: Create a spending report filtered to tax deductible expenses for easier tax prep.

Reports on mobile

Reports are available in the Monarch mobile app on iOS and Android phones. We're rolling this out gradually — if you don't see Reports yet, check back soon.

How to find reports on mobile

If you've previously used Cash Flow on mobile, you'll notice it's now called Reports (in the same spot in your navigation).

The first time Reports is enabled for you, you'll see an announcement on your Dashboard with a short video preview. Tap "Explore Reports" to jump straight to the Sankey diagram, or dismiss it to continue to your Dashboard.

  • Sharing a saved report via URL
  • Some chart types available on web — e.g., Horizontal bar chart, Stacked bar chart, Stacked cash flow chart
